Blanchelande Leaps into the Future of School Libraries

Mr & Mrs Toerien had the opportunity again this Thursday evening to showcase the work we are doing at Blanchelande on a global stage, as we were invited to present with Barbara Stripling, former President of the American Library Association, at the virtual Leap into the Future of School Libraries Conference hosted by the San Jose State University School of Information.

With speakers from the US, Australia, Canada, the UK and (of course!) Guernsey this was truely a global celebration of some of the amazing work going on in school libraries and we were delighted to have been invited directly to present by one of the conference organisers.

Our session, entitled Developing Inquiry-Based Schools and School Libraries looks at how inquiry skills can and should be developed systematically and progressively throughout school to develop engaged and empowered inquirers who are fully equipped to deal with a rapidly changing world once they leave school. As a nursery to Y13 school, Blanchelande is ideally placed to develop these skills in a coherent way and we looked at some Blanchelande case studies, including Y1, 6, 9 and 12 Signature Work inquiries as well as a recent Y5 Geography inquiry developed with Mrs Reid. It has been such a priviledge to work closely with Professor Stripling on developments in the Blanchelande Curriculum and she is full of praise for the work that staff are doing here.

Sharing on an international stage is a vital part of staying at the forefront of important conversations in about the future of education, and there is so much that can be learnt from the vibrant and enthusiastic international community of school librarians. All of the video presentations from the conference are freely available to view here.

“The curriculum is not just a body of knowledge; it’s a group of communities we must encourage our students to join.”
