My Family and other Animals is an autobiographical novel written by Gerald Durrell looking back on his bright childhood. It represents his journey of discovering his admiration for animals, no matter the shape or size. It gives us a look into his life as he explores relationships with his family. Whenever Gerald wants an animal, he’s going to get it, you can count on that. Even if he has to convince his family in his… own ways. This book is packed with all sorts of journeys you couldn’t even imagine taking! As Gerald traverses through fields and forests and frantically moves from house to house for little reason, the animals are bizarre, and the family even more! This book is great for most ages of readers, as it showcases pretty pictures and everyone will love picturing Gerald’s animals interacting in their head. It has lots of descriptive imagery and is full of unique characters and personality. I would recommend this book to anybody who’s visited the Jersey Zoo and is curious about its founder, Gerald Durrell.
